Event Information: “Achieving Patient Privacy Across a Canadian District Health Authority”
Linda Levesque, Manager of Health Information Services and Privacy Lead at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, a regional site of the Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority in Nova Scotia, will discuss her organizations efforts to protect patient privacy along with the lessons learned and the strategies that were put in place, before, during and after their patient privacy monitoring implementation. Areas she will address include determining where privacy risk management expertise exists in the organization to determine what to audit, be it for a given system or as part of an organization-wide privacy risk mitigation strategy; what education is needed for system users and auditors; what policies need to be put in place and processes need to be built and resourced in moving from a purely reactive complaints-based auditing model to a model that now includes a proactive auditing component. Most importantly, Ms Levesque will highlight the need to maximize accountability to patients and the Board given available resources and legislative or policy requirements.

Patient privacy monitoring (or privacy breach detection) systematically identifies users who are engaging in patient access patterns that are indicative of snooping, identity theft or other risky behaviors. Patient privacy monitoring is performed for all crucial EHRs and applications which provide access to Protected Health Information (PHI). The solution then filters out known false positives, and brings any remaining potential incidents to the attention of appropriate privacy personnel. FairWarning® invented and is the global leader in Patient Privacy Monitoring solutions which guard against abuse of patient information in Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and Health Information Exchanges (HIEs). Founded in 2005, FairWarning® has grown 100% or more in every subsequent year.
FairWarning® patient privacy monitoring solutions are compatible with over 185 electronic health record systems and are delivered as a turn-key appliance with over 200 proprietary privacy breach analytics included.
FairWarning®’s healthcare customers represent over 1,000 hospitals and 4,000 clinics across the United States, Canada, France and the United Kingdom. For more information, visit www.fairwarning.com.
